The proportion of Americans who say the Internet is a main source of political news and information grew fivefold since 1996, and has doubled since the last mid-term election in 2002 (PEW Internet & American Life Project).

With the large and increasing numbers of voters turning to the Internet for political information, the campaign world cannot afford to continue treating the web only as a surplus platform.

Demographically, higher income and degree-holding households use the Internet more. These households tend to be comprised of influential members of their communities. The numbers above must be understood in this context, which implies targeting this demographic will have greater reverberations in the real world.
